Nicaea, present-day Iznik, is renowned as the site of the First Ecumenical Council of 325 AD, where bishops from across the Christian world convened to resolve doctrinal disputes and formulate the Nicene Creed, a declaration of faith that continues to unify Christians today (Matthew 16:18). After breakfast, we visit the Hagia Sophia of Nicaea, the historic church where the council met, before walking along the city walls and exploring the ruins of the Imperial Palace by the lake. The nearby ancient theatre, still under excavation, offers a glimpse into the civic life of the city during the Byzantine era.
After lunch, we drive to Bursa, an early Ottoman capital. Here, we visit the Great Mosque (Ulu Cami), the Green Mosque, and the Green Tomb, masterpieces of Islamic architecture.
